You have most likely heard of the Star Safety System in the Toyota advertisements or when researching a Toyota. Perhaps you even own a Toyota and understand your vehicle is equipped with the Star Safety System and are wondering what exactly the Star Safety System is.

The Star Safety System is a suite of six safety systems designed to work separately and together to enhance the safety of your driving experience.  The safety features include:

Traction Control (TRAC) - TRAC can tell if the vehicle is losing traction by the ABS sensor data on the wheels.  When the slippage is detected, the TRAC system can automatically reduce engine power until the slipping slows down and traction is regained. The braking system will slow the wheel if the power reduction isn't enough.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) - ABS is a computer system that monitors the wheels while in motion through sensors. The ABS system can recognize when a wheel is losing traction or locking up and rapidly pulses the brake at the wheel until it begins to roll at the same speed as the other wheels. Brake pressure is sent to the other wheels to help prevent skidding.

Brake Assist (BA) - The brake assists detects when sudden braking occurs and helps the driver in stopping the vehicle and also adds pressure if the driver is braking too lightly.

Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) - EBD helps the vehicle stay in control by reducing brake pressure on the wheels carrying the least amount of weight under hard braking.

Vehicle Stability Control (VCS) - VSC is designed to help correct wheelslip and loss of traction.  VSC reduces engine power and applies brake force with data received from a steering wheel sensor and the ABS sensor.

Smart Stop Technology (SST) - SST is designed to reduce engine power when the brake and accelerator are pressed at the same time.
