When you think about finding the most secure vehicle for your family, a compact hybrid may not be the first image to spring to mind. The new Toyota Prius may just change that impression, however. Despite its compact, perfect-for-the-city size, it smashed expectation in all five of the IIHS's crash test categories, earning itself the coveted designation of Top Safety Pick+.
Not only does it offer amazing overall protection in a collision, new to 2016, it features a revolutionary open-access LATCH system.
LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) provides dedicated tether anchors and connection points for making installing a child safety seat easier. In many vehicles, however, these anchors are difficult to reach, or confusing. Not the Prius.
After a little harsh feedback, earning a Marginal rating for LATCH ease-of-use from the IIHS in 2015, Toyota's design team went to work, and created a new system so innovating and simple to use, the IIHS rated it Good+.
